What Is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure intended to fix ears that stick out too far or have an abnormal shape by modifying the ear's cartilage. The process may involve repositioning the ears closer to the head, altering the ear's folds, or reducing its size. The primary objective is to enhance the symmetry of the ears while keeping hearing functions intact. This procedure is often performed on children aged 5 and older, as their ears are nearly fully grown, but adults can benefit from it as well.

Am I or My Child a Good Candidate for Otoplasty?

You or your child may be ideal candidates for otoplasty if:

  • The ears protrude noticeably or lack natural folds
  • Teasing, low self-esteem, or emotional distress arises from the ear's appearance
  • You or your child are in good overall health and can heal properly
  • Expectations are realistic, with a focus on subtle, natural results

For children, it's important that they are old enough to understand the procedure and comply with post-surgery care. Adults typically pursue otoplasty for long-standing issues that have bothered them for years.

What Are the Benefits of Otoplasty?

  • Brings protruding ears closer to the head for a more proportionate look
  • Improves overall facial balance and symmetry
  • Produces long-lasting results with minimal need for revisions
  • Incisions are made behind the ear, making scars discreet
  • Increases confidence, especially for children dealing with teasing
  • Safe for individuals across various age groups
  • Results are natural and subtle, enhancing ear shape without overcorrection

How Is the Procedure Performed?

Otoplasty is typically done as an outpatient procedure using local anaesthesia for adults or general anaesthesia for children. The surgery begins with a small incision behind the ear, allowing Dr. Basheeth to adjust the cartilage through careful sculpting, folding, or repositioning. In certain cases, small portions of cartilage may be removed. The ear is then secured in its new position using internal sutures. After healing, the ears will lie flatter against the head, creating a more symmetrical and refined look. The procedure lasts between 1 and 2 hours, depending on its complexity.

What Is the Recovery Like?

Post-surgery, the ears are wrapped in a protective bandage or headband to help maintain the new position during healing. Mild swelling, bruising, or discomfort is typical in the first week. Most patients are able to return to regular activities, such as school or work, within 5 to 7 days. However, it’s important to avoid activities like contact sports that could potentially harm the ears for a few weeks. A soft headband may be worn at night to protect the ears during the early recovery stages. Results are visible right after the bandages are removed and continue to improve as swelling diminishes. The incisions will be well-concealed behind the ear and should fade over time.
