What Is a Mucocele?

A mucocele is a small sac of collected saliva that forms when one of the hundreds of minor salivary glands in your mouth is damaged. These glands are most numerous on the inner surface of your lips. If you accidentally bite your lip, for example, you can injure a gland's tiny duct, causing saliva to spill into the surrounding tissue instead of flowing into your mouth. This creates a soft, dome-shaped cyst that can appear bluish or pink. While they can occur anywhere in the mouth, they are most frequently found on the inside of the lower lip.

Is an Evaluation for a Mucocele the Right Option for Me?

While many small mucoceles resolve on their own, a specialist evaluation is a good idea for a persistent lump to ensure a correct diagnosis and discuss treatment. It is the right option for you if you have:

  • A persistent, soft, fluid-filled bump on the inside of your lip, cheek, or floor of mouth
  • A cyst that repeatedly seems to burst, release a clear, sticky fluid, and then refill
  • The lump is bothersome and gets in the way when you are eating or speaking
  • You are seeking a definitive diagnosis to confirm it is a benign mucocele
  • You would like a simple, quick, and permanent removal of the annoying lump

What Are the Benefits of Mucocele Removal?

Having a persistent mucocele surgically removed by Dr. Basheeth is a simple procedure with significant benefits. These include:

  • Provides a permanent cure for the condition
  • Ends the frustrating cycle of the cyst bursting and refilling
  • Alleviates any physical irritation or annoyance
  • A quick and straightforward procedure performed in the clinic
  • Provides a tissue sample for pathology to confirm the benign diagnosis
  • Improves your comfort when eating, speaking, and smiling
  • An excellent cosmetic outcome with virtually no visible scarring

How Is Surgical Removal Different From Just Popping It?

Attempting to pop or drain a mucocele at home is not a solution. While you may release the fluid, the damaged gland that caused the problem remains. It will continue to produce saliva, and the mucocele is guaranteed to return. Surgical excision is the definitive treatment. It is a minor procedure where the entire cyst is removed along with the small, specific salivary gland that is leaking. This removes the source of the problem, ensuring it cannot come back.

What Does Recovery After Mucocele Removal Involve?

The removal of a mucocele is a minor procedure performed under local anaesthetic, so you will not feel any pain. Dr. Basheeth will make a small incision to remove the cyst and the associated gland, then close the wound with a few small, dissolvable stitches. There may be some minor swelling and tenderness inside your lip for a few days, but healing is typically very fast. You will be able to eat and drink normally, though you may prefer softer foods for a day or two.

Mucocele FAQs

Can a mucocele turn into cancer?

Will I have a scar on my lip?

Can a mucocele turn into cancer?

No. A mucocele is a completely benign (non-cancerous) condition. A key reason for surgical removal is to provide a tissue sample to a pathologist to confirm the diagnosis with 100% certainty and for your peace of mind.

Will the procedure hurt?

No. The entire area inside your lip will be made completely numb using a local anaesthetic injection before the procedure begins. You will not feel any pain during the removal, only perhaps a sense of gentle pressure.

What happens if I just leave a mucocele alone?

Many very small mucoceles, especially in children, can resolve on their own over several weeks or months. However, larger or persistent mucoceles are likely to continue the cycle of swelling, rupturing, and refilling, causing ongoing nuisance.

Will I have a scar on my lip?

The small incision and dissolvable stitches are entirely on the inside of your lip. There will be no visible scar on the outside. The lining of the mouth is known for healing exceptionally well, and after a few weeks, the area will typically feel smooth and normal again.
