A mucocele is a common, harmless fluid-filled cyst that typically appears as a small, soft bump on the inside of the lower lip. It is caused by an injury to a tiny salivary gland, leading to a collection of spilled saliva just beneath the surface. While not dangerous, mucoceles can be annoying and persistent. At ENT Central in Palmerston North, Dr. Naveed Basheeth provides expert diagnosis and simple surgical removal for a quick and permanent solution.
Can a mucocele turn into cancer?
No. A mucocele is a completely benign (non-cancerous) condition. A key reason for surgical removal is to provide a tissue sample to a pathologist to confirm the diagnosis with 100% certainty and for your peace of mind.
Will the procedure hurt?
No. The entire area inside your lip will be made completely numb using a local anaesthetic injection before the procedure begins. You will not feel any pain during the removal, only perhaps a sense of gentle pressure.
What happens if I just leave a mucocele alone?
Many very small mucoceles, especially in children, can resolve on their own over several weeks or months. However, larger or persistent mucoceles are likely to continue the cycle of swelling, rupturing, and refilling, causing ongoing nuisance.
Will I have a scar on my lip?
The small incision and dissolvable stitches are entirely on the inside of your lip. There will be no visible scar on the outside. The lining of the mouth is known for healing exceptionally well, and after a few weeks, the area will typically feel smooth and normal again.
